== Participants ==

* Cameron Hall
(Also got some thoughts from others nearby.)

== Types & Examples ==

* Play and movie -- "Laramie Project" -- theatrical journalism
** http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laramie_Project
** http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laramie_Project_%28film%29
* Movie and Web site -- "Yes Men" -- (alternate reality)
** http://theyesmen.org/
** Set up parody Web site looking at how a number of corporations could be more socially responsible. The guys behind it got invited to speak at conferences, etc. Many people didn't realize it was a spoof.
* Music --
** Probably throughout history, mankind has used music to tell community stories and communicate about issues and values.
** In the modern West, these topics are probably national and multinational issues, in comparison to local issues.
** Issues music in the past 50 years tends to be more on the left, but it's better when it's a debate, a conversation.
** Music has "hooks," can get in your head more.
* News plays -- "Living Newspaper"
** Wikipedia article focused on living newspapers funded by the U.S. WPA in the 1930s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Newspaper#Notes
** From Wikipedia: "Living Newspaper is a term for a theatrical form presenting factual information on current events to a popular audience. Historically, Living Newspapers have also urged social action (both implicitly and explicitly) and reacted against naturalistic and realistic theatrical conventions in favor of the more direct, experimental techniques of agitprop theatre, including the extensive use of multimedia."
** Info from the Humanities Institute at U of Texas: http://www.humanitiesinstitute.utexas.edu/programs/living/
** Clips from the UK: http://www.livingnewspaper.net/
** Miss Porter's School in Connecticut also has a class in which students produce a living newspaper.
* Oral literature
** Middle Ages troubadors
** Lowercase scouts, original marathon
** Current -- "Youth Speaks" on YouTube -- Spoken-word compositions, have an affinity with rap -- http://www.youtube.com/user/YOUTHSPEAKS
* TV, film, video
** Comedians
** "Meet the Press" and other news talk shows
** Michael Moore and other documentaries
== Miscellaneous ==

* Cameron said he was attracted to this session because of Maurreen's minor performance (holding a sign, maybe moving it around and smiling).
* Not (just) dumbing down news, but can elevate entertainment.
* The more that different methods are used to convey information, the more opportunity there is for that information to make connections. This is in general (using different brain cells) and also because people have different learning styles.

The discussion was videotaped by CJ. Captured on iPhone.

Started the session with key question: Why are students applying for j-schools? With fewer traditional media jobs on the horizon, are journalism schools, especially the expensive ones, doing "educational malpractice," as has been referred? What are journalism schools teaching?

Notes --
Educators need to be incubators: Communicate in ways that enhance the public discourse.
NIE of the future? Civics in journalism. Is their value in this a disappearing animal? Teams of students professionalize journalism.
Needs: money; fitting new classes into the curriculum; emphasize the mind set, then the skill set.
Students need to know: how to report, write, interview, and to be able to do those things quickly; have an area of expertise.
J-schools need to teach the soul of journalism, not just journalism practices, but journalism underpinnings. There is a tension/debate at schools about how to prepare tomorrow's journalists. Should they be taught for the job market, or fundamental journalistic values about writing, critical thinking, storytelling, researching?

Other discussion --
A recent Ph.D graduate from the Missouri school talked about the frustration with the gap in communication theory and practice. Others seconded her comments. Someone brought up bringing back a Freedom Forum-type group, where news companies or other entities create a location for theorists apply theories to practice. There was lament about only writing for academic audiences in communications journals. One person proposed taking journalism faculty sabbaticals in newsrooms.

Maurreen: add a little

=How to plan a site for low-literacy adults? Maureen Skowran (I/AV Room) =

Maurreen Skowran is a former copy editor at the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer. Last year she moved to Albuquerque, N.M. She's now working part-time at the Albuquerque Journal as a copy editor. She is working on developing a newsletter for homeless people. She realized quickly that there is news or media gap in Albuquerque. Low-literacy adults need ways to access the news and important civic information. She believes this is a national issue, and she has proposed a Knight News Challenge project to trial a solution for Albuquerque.

== Participants ==

* Sam Kimball
* Bill Densmore
* Maurreen Skowran

==FOUR QUESTIONS FOR THE KNIGHT APPLICATION:==

===Marketing===
*The name is going to be EZ ABQ.
*Propose that legacy media support EQ ABQ's effort to produce a "low-literacy" version, such as with rights to stories or printing.
<ul><ul>--They could reach a different audience</ul></ul>

===What are the steps to get to where you are going===
*Hire multimedia journalist
*Develop the site -- probably a WordPress theme -- do usability testing
*Connect with [http://www.albuquerquefoundation.org/ funding community in Albuquerque.] -- Bill says this is very important. Also consider a fiscal sponsor.
*Rent office

===What needs will be fulfilled===

===What difference will the project make===
*One measurement might be able many people wrote in?

===How will it be sustained?===
*Probably donations and advertising

=== Miscellaneous ===

Q: What does this have to do with the digital divide?

*Skowran: People on the lower level of the economic spectrum -- more than 10 years ago, they can get physical access to the Internet via libraries at work or elsewhere. But for low-literacy adults, it is more overwhelming. A lot of sites are fairly complex and there is also document complexity. Newspapers are easier to read than websites, because websites have complex organization.

Skowran cites Jakob Nielsen and his work on web usability. He has studied low-literacy adult usability issues to some degree. Low-literacy adults have to plow through one word at a time.

Q: How would pages look?

*Skowran: There would be an icon on each page representing the subject matter of a page. Only three to six icons on a page. It might take folks longer to get to the page they want, but they will understand how they got there. There's always a home button on every page.

Q: What need will this fulfill?

*Skowran: People will be able to get information they weren't able to get before. There ''is'' a national newspaper called News for You, from the New Readers Press, which has some stuff online, that does approach this challenge somewhat.

Media tends to write about disadvantaged (whether by income or literacy) people, but not for them or to them, Skowran says. Also, a lot of people who are low-literate -- you might not know that; some are more successful than is expected.

===Action steps===

*Bill Densmore suggests getting in touch with Bob McCannon, the founder of the[http://www.acmecoalition.org Action Coalition for Media Education], which began in Albuquerque. He is co-president of ACME. He's at mccannon@flash.net / (505) 839-9702 / http://www.bobmccannon.org

*Skowran relates her project to the theories in Clayton Christiansen's "The Innovators' Dilemma," work. Although the project's impetus is a civic services, it also has a business advantage, by drawing in low-end consumers and nonconsumers. The market can grow with the product.

===How would this work?===

*Skowran: An example of how we might approach a story -- There was a vote in January about whether an area south of Albuquerque would become its own city. She thought it would have been interesting, if they were operating, to make simple sample ballots that illustrated the issue from a voting perspective. Also, on some pages you would choose your way into the information you need, based on following the icons. If you are on a story there will be some amount of text and some amount of pictures.

There might comic-book stories. She'll use infographics -- but simple infographics.

Q: How much original content vs. condensing things?

*Skowran: In general she expects it will all be original. She could imagine working out rights arrangements with the Albuquerque Journal and some other organizations.

Her rough plan is there would be three people on staff:
** One is the rewrite editor and community liason. She will simplify language and make sure there is an interaction with the audience, publicize the project and do quality assurance from their perspective.
** Second person is the multimedia journalist. They will be mostly visually oriented and an adequate to competent reporter.
** Third person (Skowran) will be the editor and publisher. She will be doing some of the reporting, most of the editing, and working with the community, the audience and donors and potential donors.
** The staffing would be similar to a tiny weekly. But it will be all or mainly digital, and it would have daily news.

Q: What about working with the [http://www.dukecityfix.com/ Duke City Fix?] Perhaps EZABQ could get rights to Duke City Fix copy and would simplify it. Also other local alternative media.

*Skowran: Will look into that.

=== Format ===

Skowran originally planned only a Web site. But other options are print and phone.

Print would help with publicity, and is probably more accessible, gets better ad rates.

Phone could be one or both of "smart phone" access, voice or text. Skowran thinks the target audience is likely to have more access to phones in general and cell phones in particular. But she is concerned that delivery via phone (other than just shrinking target screen size) might be more complicated than is suitable for the audience.

=== Wider audience? ===

Bill Densmore likened the project to Readers' Digest (fanatic commitment to easy reading), and suggested that EZ ABQ could appeal to people who want easy reading / media, even if they can read more-complex material.

Maurreen: tweaks & additions

==FOUR QUESTIONS FOR THE KNIGHT APPLICATION:==

===Marketing===

*Connect with [http://www.albuquerquefoundation.org/ funding community in Albuquerque.]
*Rent office

===What needs will be fulfilled===

===What difference will the project make===
*One measurement might be able many people wrote in?

===How will it be sustained?===
*Probably donations and advertising

=== Miscellaneous ===

===Action steps===

===How would this work?===

*Skowran: An example of how we might approach a story -- There was a vote in January about whether an area south of Albuquerque would become its own city. She thought it would have been interesting, if they were operating, to make simple sample ballots that illustrated the issue from a voting perspective. <big>Here are some of the end-of-day reflections from partipants in JTM-Seattle. You can hear these and other comments by launching [http://newshare.typepad.com/mgpaudio/2010/01/jtm-seattle-friday-end-of-day-reflections.html this audio stream,] or download this [http://densmore.hipcast.com/download/87af843f-078f-9687-e757-71e0084b9e9a.mp3 MP3 podcast.]
</big>

*Journalism should expand ideas about who they are and what they do.
*It might be a little too soon to write the obituary for legacy media. We have an opportunity be not just content creators but content incubators. I don't think we're dead yet.
*We had a session about how mass-media can work with hyperlocal media. Hyperlocal can give mass media heart that mass media has lost and mass media can give hyperlocal extra credibility by recognizing it.
*I've learned you cannot take certain knowledge or accepted wisdom for granted. I was shocked to learn that one person in the room had only heard of the phrase hyperlocal journalism the day before. She has been tracking hyper-local startups for years.
*I found out that covering city hall or Olympia or city hall is not economical, it's really really expensive and it is going to be a tough nut to crack.
*John Hammer has a new TAO of journalism idea. He likes that this group is transparent and open.
*I learned that we are all basically squirrels on the inside.
*I've been hearing a great spirit of collaboration. So much openness and a particular openness to collaborative.
*She has learned to make sure that it is being frame din such a way that it inspires hope and inspires to dream of solutions rather than creating a negative image with the news.
*I have been participating in a heartful mindful collaborative and I love it.
*Journalism that matters, still matters.
*I'm learning how important feelings are and discovering who Americans are and myself regarding feelings and I'm not sure if I'm doing this right -- it's about the happiness index. What if Seattle had it's own happiness index. Life would be passionate and people would be really happy.
*Last summer I went to something called bar camp, which is kind of like this open whatever we are doing now and I was underwhelmed. There was no shared purpose at that event. This feels a lot more genuine and it involves less postering and I have been really pleasantly surprised by the conversations that I have heard today.
*Grace said it is nice to see that we are all delirious. That captures it for me perfect. My head is spinning. We are all gathering here for our own reasons but there is a collective purpose at the heart of that. People are trying to push themselves about what's possible. There is a collective power in this room to really make a difference moving forward and move this new model of journalism that can be replicable for a decade.

===Steven Wright, the mapmaker, on what he's heard===

Mapmaker Steven Wright observes:

When you go deep in water there is a point where you feel like you are being pulled down. This group feels like you are still going looking and diving deeper. It's wonderful to be in a group where that is allowed.

The things that are making it to the wall are unique -- the idea of the link between the hyperlink and the heard. But what I'm hearing is fragmented still. When you look at what I've collected it doesn't have a cohesiveness yet. The map of this session may have a lot of white space in it and that is just as important as if it were full.

===More reflections===

Ann Stadler: "I hope we have a lot of white spaces .... the excitement I feel is moving into uncharted territory.

Commentator: The question that's coming up for me is what do we value? Is it money. It represents that there is going to be a shift. I'm not sure where it is all going to end up.

Maurreen Skowran: She explains the squirrel remark (above). We were talking about pattern recognition. We're programmed to recognize a threat and even if false we are safer to react to false threat as much as a real threat. That's the squirrel analogy. We are now looking forward. We are moving past the squirrelness.

Comment: She talks about [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_A._Heifetz Ron Heifitz.] An adaptive leader forces something into a period of chaos to see what emerges.

Comment: Quotes from urban planner: How do you plan a city? Uncertainty is understood as a challenge, adventure, its function cannot be determined. it takes courage to sketch partial solutions. It also takes courage to design unfinished, beginning totalities. Urban planning to the rescue.

Ilona Meager: She talked about he book social intelligence in one of her groups. She has been looking at PTSD and has been learning about neuroscience and the mind. In the book Social Intelligence the writer talks about how brains are social creatures. Brains are seeking ways to mirror other individuals linked in the room. We are really linking up strongly. I think a lot of us are feeling that energy that we each have and I'm inspired for the next day.

Jody Brannon: I have been struck at this gathering, my most recent one has been Online News Association. She has found at this one less twittering, and also less density and defensiveness about main stream media. She is deeply concerned that those of us concerned about finding investigative journalism pay -- it isn't going to pay mortages. She hopes we can tackle that a bit more with some guidelines.

Commentator: It is a very chaotic time and a lot of people don't feel like they have the answer. That may be true of individuals, but as a collective mind he's heard a lot. "You may not have the answer but we collectively do."

Peggy Holman: An obvious a-ha around the question of how is this going to be paid for. She thinks that is going to be the last thing that comes. ''' "Because the moment we answer that question, the level of innovation will fall off the cliff." '''

Commentator (cameraman): Passion always wins and if a guy throws a shoe at President Bush and the next day there are 10 Flash games overnight; the things I've seen on the Internet, it boggles my mind everyday, there is surplus of time and commitment to connecting to other people and there's gotta be a way of harnessing it.

Commentator: Journalism matters everywhere and at some point we are going to have like a world social conference for journalism. It's been an honor to be here.

Commentator: Not a visionary statement, he wants to thank the organizers for creating a place where personal interactions and a certain kid of social interaction is been the most encouraged. He teaches at the Univ. of Washington and talks about wearing cheaping suits and listening to panels "and these conferences are sole crushing ... the form persists in any number of other businesses." Rather than running from fear to the economic crisis people are seizing the opportunities.

==End of day wrap==

Stephen Silha: "Today was about possibilities and expansion. Tomorrow is more about what can we do about this. It is a design-build day. How can we role up our sleeves and do it."

Andrew Humphrey: Plugs JTM Detroit in early June: "Create or Die: Innovate, incubate and initiate." Bring together journalists, technologists, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. We hope to start companies at that conference that will be successful. June 3-June 6. The Tigers will be playing. "Detroit is the only place where you can go out of the country for lunch."

<hr>

*We should fail foward, cultivate courage.
*A special couple of days, thanks.
*I sat in two meetings today and I owe Steve a whole sheaf of pages; I was struct by the level of engagement of every person in each of these groups. I will say with the morning discussion about the news ecology for Asian American and Pacific islander communities in the northwest there was a sense of a lot of missing voices. We agreed we want to plan for an event later this year that will bring together the ethic media and communities of color that serve these communities, to see what sorts of the communities we can create there. I want to think JTM for creating that process.
*I'm leaving tomorrow morning to go back to Portland. He was happy to see people from Wisconsin, Illinois, Taiwan, Michigan, New Mexico ... all to point to something that has been a theme for me that as we evolve into these relationships the way we exchange information and our ability to participate, we are still doing in this framework of these things, often called cities, which are often called into crisis by the reach of the technologies we have now ... the great newspapers all rolse up under the banner of their cities, part of what is receding now is the marker of those names.
*There was a very big interest in keeping the conversation going at least temporarily. One of the ways we are going to be doing that is through a LinkedIn group. There will probably be other venues before too long but that is one we could do in a hurry. And there will be subgroups.
*We concluded an occasional face-to-face meeting might be in order also. John Hammer volunteers the Washington News Council office near Safeco Field and an ale house.
*Passing along a thank you and a note that this is the third time she has tried to use Open Space technology and this is the best use I have seen. It was very well directed. At one point this afternoon I just stood in the room and take all the voices in. The other thing I'd like to mention is the June 22-28, 2010 social forum is coming up in Detroit. I urge you all to come as participants. The one thing that is not in this room is the community. There's a lot of jouranlists, but not the community.
*But JTM No. 14 it is no longer a surprise to me that there are community members, many of whom are represented here, are in it for the long haul. Jonathan Lawson is impressed with how many independent groupings there were who came to the conclusion that there is a problem with media literacy and we should do something about that. Common Language Project is working on this, the Asian American Journalists Association and Reclaim the Media. There's a realization that this is where we need to be as well. It's about getting our hands dirty in the soil that sustains journalism. It's really humbling to me.
*The C-word keeps coming up, collaboration. Having been a lone wolf most of my life it has been a real eye opener. The definition of a healthy ecology is it is all intertwined. This is the first think I have ever allowed myself to be part of something and allowed it to be bigger than myself. She did most of the communication for the organizing committee. But it was writing by committee, which was a whole new experience. But it was great. A lot of humanity has its nose pressed up against the window and it is not just about me on sustainability ... it's just magical, I just never expected this, for myself. I've know about sustainability for a long time, but now I'm starting to live it.
*My theme has been the business model and what I want to add to that is the need for collaboration. Fewer people succeed by themselves in startups. You are greatly more likely to succeed if you have a partner. If you can't find one person to believe in what you are doing, find somebody else's model and get on board. We are going to be very entrepreneurial but we are going to have to do it together.
* The more that different methods are used to convey information, the more opportunity there is for that information to make connections. This is in general (using different brain cells) and also because people have different learning styles.

A one-day Talkfest -- "Putting Feet on the Streets for Journalism" -- to develop plans for a news organization incubator, ws held Jan. 21, 2009 at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Mo.

The name of the incubator is the RJI Collaboratory. Many of us at the Reynolds Journalism Institute and the Missouri School of Journalism think it's a critical -- and opportune -- time to establish a news organization incubator.

This is why: In 2008, traditional news organizations continued to shrink or close their doors. They laid off more than 15,000 journalists, resulting in a significant loss of good journalism so vital to U.S. citizens and our democracy. Dozens of communities now have little or no coverage of their local
health issues, their local environment, or their local government. Some no longer have reporters, no journalism at all in their communities.

That trend is likely to accelerate in 2009. Meanwhile, the Web continues to provide fertile ground for new social/news/information organizations, hundreds of which have appeared over the last few years and are thriving, including MaxPreps.com, MinnPost, WestSeattleblog.com, TheKnot.com, Huffington
Post, BlogHer, Politico, the St. Louis Beacon, CSTV.com (which is now part of CBSSportsline.com), and Marketwatch.

We think the RJI Collaboratory could provide resources and knowledge on how to start effective and successful Web-based news organizations. Those who could benefit from the news organization incubator are entrepreneurial mid-career journalists, and existing news organizations that are undertaking the
transformational strategies necessary to adapt to a Webcentric world.

Here's a link to the program: [[http://newshare.com/wiki/index.php/Collaboratory-program]]

==WHAT WE'LL FIGURE OUT==

These are some of the aspects of a news organization incubator that we need to figure out, and why we're asking you to participate:

*What does a news organization incubator do exactly? We think an incubator can provide advertising strategies and techniques, technology services,
business planning, Web shell (information architecture/structure or organization of information) and design services, and ethics guidelines. But what else? And how does it provide its guidance
and services?

*What roles can other colleges and departments of the University of Missouri play in a news organization incubator? Could computer science
students develop online services for entrepreneurial journalists? Could business school students work with entrepreneurial journalists to develop robust
organizations?

*What could an incubator do in the first year? The second year? The third year?

*What does a news organization incubator need to get started?

*Does a news organization incubator derive funding from the organizations it nurtures? If so, how? If the news organization incubator is part of
the university, what is the incubator's intellectual property policy?

*How does the news organization incubator develop partnerships with other centers or journalism schools?

*How does the news organization incubator develop partnerships with organizations that might be interested in funding start-ups?

During the one-day event, we'll meet together in the morning to show you some successful Web-based news organizations. We'll discuss why we think a news organization incubator is necessary, and identify issues that entrepreneurial journalists and existing news organizations face as
they make the transition to becoming Webcentric news organizations.

In the afternoon, we'll meet in working groups to address particular issues in starting a news organization incubator, and how it will function. The approaches developed in those groups will serve as the foundation for a plan for the RJI Collaboratory.

==HOW TO ATTEND==

We hope you are able to join us. To have a productive conversation, we're limiting the in-person attendance to 60 people. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can attend. Send an email to [mailto:jstevens@mmjourno.com jstevens@mmjourno.com], or call 707-495-1112.<br>
For those of you who are out of town and can't make the trek to Columbia, but still want to tune in, send an email to [mailto:jstevens@mmjourno.com jstevens@mmjourno.com], and we'll set up a way for you to tap into the conference through Adobe Connect.<br><br>
===10 a.m. -- Inaugural Briefing: The Journalism Innovation Engine===
<ul>
*With the intention of broadly collaborating with other institutions and enterprises, the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism is seeding the Journalism Innovation Engine at RJI. It's a one-year, "do-tank" to discover, assess, integrate and deploy multiple revenue solutions for the news industry across multiple platforms. Learn about the ideas and people behind the Engine in a short briefing and an interactive idea-gathering session.
===10:30 a.m. -- The Strategic Landscape: A briefing ===
<ul>
*RJI commissioned former journalist and noted payments-industry analyst and consultant to comprehensively study the best research on mobile, print and web marketplaces to paint a picture from a non-news-industry perspective of strategies for sustaining journalism. Be prepared for some surprises in this thought-provoking discussion. </ul>

===11 a.m. -- Work in progress: The Information in Valet Project===
<ul>
*Moving from mass markets to mass customization, from gatekeeper to "information valet" is an urgent task for traditional print and broadcast news organizations. Reynolds Fellow [http://rji.missouri.edu/projects/info-valet/index.php Bill Densmore,] InfoCard's [http://www.parity.com/team.html#paul Paul Trevithick] and other collaborators present a work-in-progress concept solution addressing user privacy, interest-based advertising, customized news and multi-site subscription networks -- including a proposed launch timetable. What's missing? A Q&A follows. </ul>

===11:45 a.m. -- The Wall of ideas: Tapping the wisdom of our crowd ===
<ul>
*The Jack Morton Auditorium and adjacent foyer offers the space during lunch for participants to caucus and agree on critical topics to propose for discussion during one round of concurrent, group-called breakout sessions in the afternoon. We'll describe how the convening process works before serving a box lunch. But first, we'll ask everyone in the room: What are you working on?</ul>

===12:15-1 p.m. -- BOX LUNCH -- A chance to network ideas, and post breakouts ===
<ul>
*Post discussion topics on the News Wall, and negotiate with fellow convenors to combine or morph related topics.</ul>

===1 p.m. -- The Value of privacy: Findings from a new national study -- Prof. Lee Wilkins===
<ul>
*As the public becomes more aware of how its time and attention is "monetized," what are citizens willing to trade for the privacy, and how is it valued? Missouri School of Journalism Prof. Lee Wilkins reveals results from a new national study completed in in early April. </ul>

===1:45 p.m. -- The value of information: The Internet's 14-year flirtation with "paying for content"===
<ul>
*Missouri School of Journalism graduate researcher Emily Sussman quickly previews her forthcoming paper surveying 14 years of experiments aimed at finding a new source of online revenue for news besides advertisements. Have any ideas worked? Remember the New Century Network? What do pioneers think today? What has been the impact on news? '''A Q&A follows.'''</ul>

===2:15 p.m. -- QUICK-SHARE BRIEFINGS===
<h3>What is journalism in the new medium of the Web? What are its values and functions in a participatory democracy? We plan to make signs out of these slogans and put them around the Fred W. Smith Forum. The purpose is to remind us that we're entering a new medium, and to help us focus on journalism in the new medium.

Here's what we've come up with so far. Use the wiki function to add your suggestions: </H3>
Entrepreneurial journalists, no matter where they are, if they’re in a position to take advantage of what the RJI Collaboratory has to offer. Other groups: communities without journalists, students, organizations that want to hire entrepreneurial journalists.

Arrival: 8:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.

9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Introduction -- Why are we doing this?

9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Who’s doing entrepreneurial journalism successfully?

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The group provides answers to this question: What can we do on the Web that we couldn’t do before in other media? We’ll focus on these four areas: Community-building. Advertising and marketing. News and information. Mobile.

11:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. We set up the afternoon breakout groups, introduce the graduate students and their roles, explain how the groups work, and organize participants into groups.

Participants will rotate through all four groups.

Graduate students will facilitate the groups, type up notes, and present the notes to entire group.
3:15 p.m. - 3:55 p.m.

1. Building and Integrating Community. What does it mean to make the community a news organization’s visual and functional engine? What does it look like? How does it work? How does a jurno report differently? What does the structure of the network look like? How does it function? What does the RJI Collaboratory need to provide to support jurnos to accomplish this aspect of setting up a Web-based entrepreneurial journalism network? What’s the absolute minimum required? How does it become more complex?

2. Web-based News Entrepreneurship 101 -- What must an entrepreneurial journalist need to know to start a Web-based news organization? What does an entrepreneurial journalist need to know about business regulations? How can an entrepreneurial journalist determine if her idea can work? What does the RJI Collaboratory do for these entities?

3. Advertising and Marketing -- How can an entrepreneurial journalist determine if her Web-based news organization can be supported by ads? Are there different approaches for different types of organizations, i.e. geographic v. topic-based? What’s the absolute minimum required? What’s the simplest way to accomplish that minimum? How does an advertising approach grow and change? How can a jurno use search-engine optimization? What can the RJI Collaboratory provide in this arena, and how? What ethical questions will a journalist face? How can the RJI Collaboratory assist?

4. Mobile -- How does mobile fit into social/news/information networks? What does an entrepreneurial journalist need to know to distribute content (news, information, ads, social networking) to a mobile platform? What’s the absolute minimum required? What’s the simplest way to accomplish that minimum? How does an entrepreneurial journalist grow mobile? What does the RJI Collaboratory do for these entities?

'''The Wrap-up:'''

4:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Graduate students present summaries from the break-out groups.

4:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Group discusses the challenge: What can we do now? Can we set goals and milestones? What do we want to happen?

We will put a start-up local health site on the RJI Collaboratory Network so that people can participate in its development. We will ask for other volunteers to do the same.

=You're invited to help plan a news-organization "incubator"=
You're invited to participate in a one-day Talkfest -- "Putting Feet on the Streets for Journalism" -- to develop plans for a news-organization incubator. The free Talkfest will be held on Wed., Jan. 21, 2009 at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Mo.

The name of the incubator is the '''RJI Collaboratory.''' Many of us at the Reynolds Journalism Institute and the Missouri School of Journalism think it's a critical -- and opportune -- time to establish a news-organization incubator.

==WHAT WE'LL FIGURE OUT==
[[Image:Rji-working.jpg|thumb|150px|right|[http://rji.missouri.edu/vision-and-mission/index.php THE RJI VISION]]]

These are some of the aspects of a news organization incubator that we need to figure out, and why we're asking you to participate:
<UL>

</ul>

==HOW TO ATTEND==

There is no charge for attending the RJI Collaboratory Talkfest. The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute has underwritten the cost of planning, facilities and box lunches for participants because we want to make sure that entrepreneurial journalists, educators, and experts from the world of technology and business can add their voice to the planning process without cost beyond traveling to Columbia, MO. We'd like the Collaboratory to recognize, highlight and support related efforts nationwide.

We hope you are able to join us. To have a productive conversation, we're limiting the in-person attendance to 60 people. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can attend. Send an email to RJI Fellow Jane Stevens ([mailto:jstevens@mmjourno.com jstevens@mmjourno.com]), or call 707-495-1112.<br>

===TRAVEL/LODGING OPTIONS===

Getting to Columbia is easy. You can fly into either the St. Louis or Kansas City airports (St. Louis is about 20 minutes closer). Both are served by all major carriers. In addition, Northwest Airlines operates three daily flights from Memphis to the Columbia Regional Airport, about 15 minutes from campus and the Reynolds Institute. For more, see: [http://newshare.com/wiki/index.php/RJI-Collaboratory-travel GETTING TO AND STAYING IN COLUMBIA].
